Being an avid fan of regional cuisines from all corners of India, I had been wanting to explore “Coast Cafe” for a long, long time. A lip-smacking winter lunch here after strolling around the picturesque Hauz Khas lake nearby made sure this place now tops my list for the Best Kerala Cuisine in Delhi NCR ! One gets better appams than even the hallowed joints at INA Market !
Located right next to the entry gate of Hauz Khas Village, nestled over 2 floors above Ogaan, Coast Cafe has a stunningly simple and soothing charm. Pastel hues adorn its landscape coupled with green, leafy arches & pots. We were greeted by the gentlemen so warmly, it almost felt home right from the word go!
The menu spread is quite lean, but what they offer is brilliant. We went for the signature dishes , and had a jolly good time savoring each of those authentic coastal flavors.
Pepper Chicken Curry : Small fried chicken chunks in home-style pepper curry were a definite treat. The subtle punch of hot-pepper which one experienced after a while was fabulous.
Malabari Kokum Fish Curry : I am a big fan of coconut-based curries, so therein lies my passion for both South Indian and Thai cuisines :). This orangish, beautiful preparation had searfish in tangy Kokum & coconut-milk gravy. It made for some (foo)divine combination with hot steamed rice!
Appams: These were so fluffy and spongy , we couldn’t quite control our urge to order more and more ! Perfect.
Chutneys: There were three of those – Kokum (Pink), Tamarind ( Red) and Chilli (Maroon) . Lovely accompaniments to go with appams.
Coast Cafe was so full when we had arrived, and yet the service offered was impeccable. Prices are a bit on the upper-side, but to live this fantastic coastal experience you can choose to ignore them. For me, now I have one more definite reason to love HKV and satiate my unabating appetite 😉
